SURREY county councillor Christine Stevens has called for a Haslemere town meeting to discuss the safety of Wey Hill. Following last week's vandalism in the area, Mrs Stevens has suggested CCTV should be installed to deter the culprits from re- offending. The calls for an end to trouble in Wey Hill were echoed by Haslemere Town Mayor Brian Howard. In a letter to the chairman of the Safer Waverley Partnership, Dave Johnson, Mrs Stevens acknowledged that there were problems in Wey Hill. She said: "When incidents like this occur it unsettles everyone and other issues emerge, such as allegations of speeding and parking chaos at the Wey Hill fairground car park. "I could suggest we have a town meeting about it with partners. This would enable people to let authorities know how they feel and discuss current actions." It is hoped a solution can be reached which will bring all of the authorities in Haslemere together. In the letter, Mrs Stevens added: "Haslemere Town Council own and manage Lion Green and have done well to improve it. "And the Chamber of Trade are trying to lift Wey Hill in the light of announcements about a bank branch closure and a useful ironmongers shop." Mr Howard, who was installed as Mayor of Haslemere last month, added his support to the need for something to be done. He said: "CCTV cameras have a use but tend to move trouble on to somewhere else. "However Wey Hill is clearly a hot spot for trouble at the moment and it could be beneficial if cameras were used, at least until it calms down. "We hope that something positive will come out of the letter Christine has sent out." Meanwhile The Eagle radio station is doing its bit to breathe new life into Wey Hill. The radio station has declared its support for the area by spreading its message of love. Businesses in Wey Hill have been sent limited edition "I love Wey Hill" stickers to put up in shop windows and cars. Eagle programme director Peter Gordon, said he hopes the idea will spark action in the road. He said: "Everyone is saying Wey Hill is having a hard time, and whilst there seems to have been a lot of talking not much action has followed, until now. "We wanted to lend our support and we hope the stickers will draw attention to the fact that there are many businesses in this part of Haslemere which are not only successful, but proud of it too." Following its successful "Love Bus Tour" visit to Haslemere earlier this year, The Eagle will broadcast again from the town in the next few weeks.
