A PETERSFIELD resident and chairman of the Flag Institute is urging people to decorate the town properly for the QueenÕs Golden Jubilee celebrations in June.
Malcolm Farrow from Durford Road is hoping to see dozens of national flags on display in Petersfield to mark the occasion.
He said: ÒI do hope we will see the town properly decorated to mark this great occasion, which is not even a once-in-a- lifetime happening.
ÒThe easiest and cheapest way to do this is of course to fly our national flags, lots of them and wherever appropriate.Ó
Mr Farrow says he has been on the lookout in the town for places to fly flags.
Other than the regular spots at the Forge in Charles Street, St PeterÕs Church in the Square and outside the Festival Hall, Mr Hall says there are not many obvious locations.
But he said: ÒThere are, however, several empty flagpoles and, in the town centre, lots of angled brackets above shop doorways. I counted 35. These brackets are just waiting for a broom handle with a flag attached.
ÒOther suitable places include market stalls, construction sites, the police station, hospital, supermarkets and schools, the list is endless.
ÒSuitable national flags can cost less than a tenner, although top quality ones obviously cost more, and lots of them flying throughout the town would look splendid and give the place a real boost.Ó
He added: ÒThere are so few occasions when the British really come together as a nation to celebrate something good, so letÕs be a bit extrovert for a change and mark the forthcoming jubilee with a really colourful display of our beautiful national flags.Ó
He added: ÒWhile we are about it why not fly the Petersfield town flag too, but does anyone know what it looks like?Ó
