LAND owners are warning others to beware following an incident which took place last week. On Friday afternoon, between the hours of 3 pm and 4 pm two field gates were stolen from land in Churt. One was a new 12 foot galvanised steel field gate and the other an oak five-bar gate. The owners wish to remain anonymous but they were very concerned about the implications of these thefts. They commented: "Apart from the mindless vandalism , it is quite clear that the thieves had absolutely no regard for livestock. "Stock is often separated for very good reasons. Any opportunities for them to get together can quickly lead to 'in fighting' and injury." Fortunately the owners visit the land regularly. Their quick action averted a far more serious problem. "It would not have been long before the stock and the horses were loose on the roads which would endager road users and could cause an accident. John Robini, the crime prevention officer for the area, would like to hear from anyone who might have experienced similar thefts in the area. He would also like to know if anyone has recently employed workman to carry out fencing work on land where gates, such as described, might have been needed. If you do have any information, call John Robini on 01252 573419.
