A GROUP campaigning against parking controls imposed by the county council was celebrating this week after Surrey leader David Hodge shelved all its controversial proposals.

The measures included introducing residents' bays and more yellow lines in Haslemere.

The controls were originally agreed at the county's Local Committee on March 16, despite widespread protests by Haslemere residents.

The committee meeting in March had dropped proposals for pay-and-display charges in the town but did vote for other restrictions.

Mr Hodge's decision to drop all the measures came with assurances there would now be extensive consultations locally.
