This is the 11th year of the event which is sponsored on a national basis by the Tidy Group and titled National Spring Clean.
The Tidy Group donated bags, tabards and general advice with the district council providing a disposal vehicle.
There were 25 volunteers who responded to requests for help. The Alton Society found the number slightly disappointing and thought perhaps Altonians consider the town to be spik and span with no need for an annual tidy up?
Maps were issued to area co-ordinators who ensured that all of the public areas in the town were covered by the clean up. Lots of bags of rubbish were collected and deposited at various nominated points around the town for collection by the disposal vehicle.
It was generally considered that Alton should be pleased about what is being achieved in tidying up the town.
But there are problem areas such as Flood Meadows and the public car parks (covered with used parking tickets) which could be improved upon where the dumping of beer bottles, crisp packets and fast food containers is most prolific.
"With just a modicum of pride and respect from the careless few who spoil the aesthetics of a lovely town for Altonians and visitors, the look of the town could be bettered," said a spcoety spokesman.
Alton Society is always on the lookout for volunteers to help with natural environment work around the town for a couple of hours a month. For more details phone the Natural Environment chairman on 01420 82780.
