HASLEMERE’S main High Street car park is gearing up for a major make-over costing more than £150,000 to include re-surfacing, re-lining, and structural improvements to the drainage.
Waverley borough council contractors Hobart Paving start work on Monday, June 6, and it will be carried out in sections over a four-week period to keep the disruption to a minimum and to ensure that parking behind Waitrose is still available for shoppers and residents.
The car park will be closed every night from 8.30pm to 7am the following morning throughout the works.
The Tarmac laying will take place over a few nights to reduce the number of heavy-duty vehicles going through the town during busy periods of the day.
Letters were sent out by Waverley to neighbouring residents and businesses this week, and notices were placed on the windscreens of parked cars to provide advance warning of the month-long overnight closure and apologise for any lights and noise.
Drivers were also warned that any vehicles parked in a way that could obstruct the works, would be moved to another area of the car park by a recovery vehicle contractor.
Borough councillor Jim Edwards, Waverley’s portfolio holder for environmental services, said: “This is a really exciting time for Haslemere as the car park is in need of some attention to bring it up to a high standard. The improvements will also mean the council will be able to reduce significantly the maintenance costs of the site, so these savings can be reinstated into services and facilities to benefit Waverley residents.
“Haslemere is a beautiful town and it is important that the facilities the council provides are of a high standard.”
The car park will remain open during the day but with limited spaces available. Disabled parking will always be provided and will be signposted.
During the project, permit holders for the car park will be able to use Chestnut Avenue car park instead if there are no spaces available off the High Street.
Waverley’s head of environmental services Richard Homewood said: “The work will be done in three main phases and divided up into long strips. The parking layout will also be improved.”
