ALTONÕS car parks could be among those to benefit from a £63,000 maintenance programme which was due to be considered on Wednesday at East Hampshire District CouncilÕs cabinet meeting.

If approved, the programme of works will be completed before April 2003.

It should include the repair and replacement of raised flower beds in Lady Place car park and improvements to visibility splays for vehicles exiting Manor car park onto Draymans Way.

Jacinta Standen, cabinet portfolio holder for car parks, said: ÒThe programme has taken into account comments and suggestions from town and parish councils, local traders and car park users. If approved it will lead to some much needed improvements, all of which will be completed by spring of next year.Ó

Other projects to be included within the 2002/03 programme are expected to include the installation of grit bins in all EHDC owned pay-and-display car parks, along with replacement ticket machines and provision of a taxi pick-up facility in the central car park in Petersfield, and improvements to address flooding problems in Headley Road car park at Grayshott.

Over the past 12 months the district council has spent nearly £160,000 on programmed maintenance and improvement works to its town centre car parks, in both Alton and Petersfield. These have included the resurfacing of both Lady Place car park in Alton and the eastern end of the central car park at Petersfield, together with the installation of new lighting, and improved pedestrian facilities.

According to EHDC parking and highways manager John Elson, the main purpose of the works has been Òto ensure that the structure of the car parks is maintained in a reasonable condition, and that the car parks provide the public who use them with a pleasant and safe environmentÓ.
