THE signs are up and the heat is on for Liphook’s 114th Carnival, which will burst into life on Saturday.

The fun begins at 11am at the Junior School in Avenue Close, with the children’s fancy dress competition being judged at 11.30am.

Prizes are awarded in four different age categories and there will also be a Best Overall and a special Carnival Committee Award, followed by entertainment for the children.

“We are very grateful to the Junior School for their support,” said carnival chairman Karen Feeney.

“It proved to be a big success over the last two years with lots of children taking part and we hope to attract another large crowd.”

All floats, push-and-pull participants as well as walkers and adults in fancy dress will be assembled in Longmoor Road by 5.30pm, where judging takes place at 5.45pm.

Entertainment starts in The Square, from 6.30pm, when the Bournemouth Carnival Band and the Dolphin Marching Band, will get the night in full swing, followed by the crowning of Carnival queen Jodie Molesworth.

The procession moves from Longmoor Road into The Square at 7pm, making its way through the village along Portsmouth, Station and Midhurst roads, and then into Headley Road, before back to the starting point along The Avenue.

After the parade, revellers are invited to enjoy a spectacular bonfire and fireworks display in Radford Park, from 8.30pm.

Karen added: “Why not participate in carnival night, it really is terrific fun. There are lots of ways you can take part in the procession!

“You don’t have to register your entry - just turn up on the night. It’s as easy as that. It is also an ideal opportunity for any business or organisation, small or large, to promote itself.

“Think of a topical idea then try to make up a funny deviation from that idea.

“The idea of making a float doesn’t have to be based around a vehicle.

“Take a look into the depths of that garage - you will be surprised what you find. That old pram you were going to throw out years ago will make a perfect base for the push and pull.

“Frames built around this and covered in hardboard or strong cardboard, suitably painted can be surprisingly effective. Also remember it is going to be dark when the procession gets under way, so add some lights.

Power can come from a car battery or small generator supplying power for fairy lights or flashing bulbs.”

Karen added: “If you don’t want the bother of making a float, or a push-and-pull, then just dress up for fun. It’s judged in the evening, and open to all – just let your imagination run wild. Make sure you have an official collecting box to shake and enjoy yourself while helping to raise money for local charities.

“We also have a new trophy this year – The John Carver Cup for Best Newcomer – in honour of our much loved and much missed John.

“It is open to any float or fancy dress entry by any group or individual who has only taken part in the carnival for the last four or less years. You might just be the lucky winner.”

The carnival committee is always looking for volunteer marshals and helpers.
