CYCLING fans have a rare chance to see newly-crowned Tour de France champion Chris Froome racing on the county’s roads this Sunday (July 31).
Froome, who scooped his third ‘maillot jaune’ on the cobbles of Paris last Sunday after a thrilling three weeks of racing, has confirmed he will make his debut in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic exactly a week after his latest triumph.
It will be the first time Froome has raced in Britain since the 2014 Tour de France, when the first three stages were held in England.
Though officially racing for Team Sky, the 200km classic race forms part of Froome’s final preparations for the Rio Olympic Games where he is going for gold in both the road race and the time trial.
Also taking part in this Sunday’s race will be Froome’s GB Olympic road race teammates Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard and Steve Cummings, a two-times Tour de France stage winner in his own right, as well as last Sunday’s stage winner German sprinter Andre Greipel.
The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic will set off from The Mall in central London at 1.15pm before embarking on a circular route into the Surrey countryside taking in beauty spots Box Hill and Leith Hill.
Thousands of fans are expected to line the streets of London and Surrey to cheer on the racers, and for anyone unable to make it in person the race will be shown live on BBC TV.
Visit the website www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk for a route map and the anticipated timings of the cyclists arrival at key points on the course.
