IF you have ever fancied trying Morris dancing, now’s your chance.

Alton Morris, who can often be seen dancing in the town and outside pubs, is holding a couple of taster nights at Alton Infant School – use Victoria Road entrance – on October 12 and October 19, starting at 8pm.

Prospective members are invited to “come along and have a go” as no experience is necessary.

Alton Morris dances the ‘Border’ style of dancing which is energetic and showy and has no intricate stepping.

Dancers use sticks made from hazelwood to clash with other dancers. Both men and women are welcome, and everyone going along will be shown the moves for a couple of simple dances.

It is free to take part, and visitors can expect a fun evening with a friendly bunch of people.

There’s no need to be fit – you can do as much or as little as you like.

Anyone who enjoys the experience can then go along to practice every week if they wish, which is on a Friday night, throughout the autumn and winter.

Longtime member and Alton resident Ann Foulkes said: ”I had never done it before when I first went along, but I spent the winter practising and learning the dances and I was able to join in with the side in the summer at folk festivals, pubs and, of course, in Alton.

“It’s a great way to keep fit and make new friends.”

And if you play an instrument, you will be welcome as well. Ann added: “The dance music isn’t difficult to pick up and you can either read music or play by ear.

“Anyone coming along is also invited to join the rest of the side at the pub afterwards too.”
