FAMILY support charity Home-Start Butser is back on track after resolving the funding crisis that once threatened its future. Staff at the Petersfield charity have praised the loyal support of the community who helped them live to fight another day. But Viv Robson, chairman of Home-Start, said much more needed to be done to help balance the books in the future. She said: "We have been incredibly lucky with the community we live in. People keep coming through the door with ideas for helping out. "A third of our income has come from the community through donations and fundraising." Fear of closure had been looming over the organisation for months, but emergency funds arrived from the social services, the Local Network Fund, the Bordon Charity and the Newby Trust to help keep them afloat Now they have a shortfall of just £6,000 and Mrs Robson is confident they can find the necessary funding for the months ahead. She said: "We are safe for this year but what we really need is money. The grants we have received have just been one-offs." Home-Start offers support and practical help to parents with young children in the area and currently relies on 22 volunteers. Mrs Robson, a volunteer herself, understands the frustration of her fellow staff. She said: "Obviously we feel a lot of anxiety. It is hard not knowing where money is going to come from and that kind of insecurity is very frustrating." Due to fewer staffing hours and a lower budget, the charity will be forced to reduce the number of families supported and there are still fears for its long-term future. Since funding from the National Lottery Community Fund ended, the charity has relied on fundraising events, donations and one-off grants to keep it going. Now fundraising collections have been planned on May 20 - 21 outside Tesco in Petersfield and a street collection in September. To get involved, or to make a donation call 01730 895671.
