THE newly-opened Waverley Grange BUPA care home in Waverley Lane invited Chelsea pensioners, servicemen and ex-service personnel to join residents, family and staff in their own remembrance service on Thursday last week.

It was the first community event organised by the home, which is hoping to hold the service annually.

Padre Barry Burbidge of the Royal Garrison Church at Aldershot conducted the service and The Last Post was sounded by a military bugler.

Chelsea pensioners Terry Abbott, Marjorie Cole and Les Perrier were joined by ex-servicemen of the Parachute Regiment and servicemen from the Army Training Corps at Deepcut as they planted the rose bush Remembrance in the garden and laid a wreath.

A second wreath was laid on behalf of residents by Janet Green, the wife of one of the home's first residents who had sadly passed away.

Afterward, residents and guests enjoyed a buffet and entertainment by a jazz band. The Chelsea pensioners visited those residents who could not leave their rooms to make sure they were not left out and home manager Karen Smith made a presentation to them in appreciation of their visit.
