THE winners of this year’s children’s art competition at Alton’s Allen Gallery made a real impact on the judges, who have paid tribute to their impressive and inspirational work.

The theme for the competition was ‘Books and Stories’ and children were invited to submit artwork based on their favourite book, character, or even a comic book story.

The winner of the five to seven-year-old age category was Lawrence Lavelle with his drawing of ‘Paddington’s Marmalade’.

Gallery manager Jamie Allen said: “The judges were particularly impressed with Lawrence’s use of collage to complement the drawing.”

The eight to 11 age category was won by Sinjo Lim, from Speenhamland Primary School, whose painting is based on ‘Journey to the River’ by Eva Ibbotson and is said to feature “excellent use of colour” to create a striking sunset scene.

Generously donated by James Capsey, sales and marketing account manager of Daley Rowney, the prizes were presented by Roy Ennis, from Alternative Packing Soloutions, Daely Rowney’s local stockist.

Mr Allen continued: “Following a great year celebrating Hampshire’s most famous author last year, the theme of this competition celebrates all things literature.

“There was an excellent standard of artwork based on a wide range of books, including some great pastel drawings taking inspiration from Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks.”

The children’s work was displayed in the Allen Gallery Café until last Saturday.
