A train-shaped planter has been built at Alton railway station by Alton Town Council to celebrate Railway 200 - and it wants people to vote on a name for it.
Railway 200 is a year-long celebration of Britain’s first railway opening in 1825, and with this in mind four of the six names on the council’s shortlist are railway-related. The options are:
Bob - for Bob Booker, founder of Friends of Alton Station and the man who helped grow the volunteer group.
George - for George Stephenson, known as the ‘Father of Railways’ and a steam locomotive pioneer.
Jane - for Jane Austen, literary legend and Chawton resident who knew Alton well. The town’s first railway station was built in 1852, 35 years after she died.
Cornelius - for Sir Cornelius Neale, the first general manager of the railway company that built Alton station.
Watercress - to celebrate the Alton railway lines’ importance to the watercress industry by helping to transport the crop from Alresford to Alton, London and beyond.
Yvette - for cabinet minister Yvette Cooper, who was educated in Alton.
The most popular name will be unveiled on a commemorative plaque in July.
Voting closes on June 30. To vote, visit https://tinyurl.com/2nuayx4j
