HASLEMERE was once again filled with cheer for Sunday’s annual Christmas Market, and despite a steady drizzle all day, thousands came to browse the festive stalls selling everything from hats to reindeer skins – and to taste the huge variety of food offerings from chess and chutneys to chocolate and cake.

Town crier Christian Ashdown announced the fair open and the High Street, West Street, Haslemere Museum and The Georgian House Hotel were filled with crafts, clothes and Christmas gifts while charity stalls did well alongside those selling local produce plus the regular farmers’ market traders.

Father Christmas set up his grotto in the museum with fairground rides outside and a live nativity set up by Kidsrome with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus surrounded by donkeys and a sheep to compete the tableaux.

The Hoppa service ran a free park and ride bus from Shottermill so visitors could get to the town centre easily.

Mayor Melanie Odell, who has organised the event with Iain Lynch for the past 15 years, said: “The stalls were not blocked by the usual hoards, but it was easier to see the lovely goods on offer and stallholders were very pleased with their takings and the day’s friendly feel.”

The museum reported although visitor numbers were down, takings were up in both the café and shop and stalls enjoyed a constant flow of shoppers. They thanked the team of around 60 people who helped including stewards, Hoppa drivers, St John first-aiders, Macmillan volunteers at The Georgian House Hotel and the police and fire service.

Mrs Odell added:?“Not only do many hands make light work but local knowledge and friendly faces are invaluable – it is the volunteers who make the Christmas Market so special.”

The town was lit up by new lights, and a Christmas tree which has been professionally decorated.

The tree and lights, including those in Wey Hill, cost around £20,000, with a £2,000 donation from Haslemere Chamber of Trade.

• Many shops also opened for the day and in the run-up to Christmas, will be open on December 13 and 20, with free parking.

• Christmas carols will be sung on Lion Green, on December 19, at 6pm, following the Wey Hill Christmas Market (10am-4pm).
