THE ninth Christmas Tree Festival of the Parish of the Resurrection in St Lawrence Church, Alton, has been proclaimed “another sparkling success".

Opened this year by the Alton mayor Derek Gardner, the main aim of the festival is to provide a free event for individuals and families to enjoy that also strengthens the link between the church and the local community.

A record 80 beautiful and originally-decorated Christmas trees and nativity scenes were on display and many of the trees were provided by local businesses and organisations, which endorsed the real sense of community spirit found in Alton.

Organiser Elaine Cook said: “The number of people who visited the church was greater than ever.

“And thanks to their generous donations, each of the chosen charities – Dementia Friendly Alton and Christians Against Poverty – will receive several hundred pounds to continue their invaluable work in our community.

“As always, the Memory Tree, provided by Kemp and Stevens, will remain in the church over the Christmas period for those who wish a quiet moment to remember their loved ones and place their name on the branches.”
