After five years of trying in the first division of the Fuller's League, Churt finally overcame local rivals Haslemere on Saturday.

An under-strength Haslemere, with a mixture of experience and youth, travelled the short distance to Churt, who were boosted by the return of key players.

It was again a pitch to test the batsman's nerve and patience, and Churt, put in by Kevin Gray, began well with another telling score from Scott Power.

With the loss of Power, it was Dave Thomas who injected momentum into the innings, blazing the Haslemere attack to all areas of the ground with a mixture of raw power and guile.

A typically bold declaration by the captain, who remained unbeaten at 89, left Haslemere with time to chase a target of 198.

Gray led from the front for Haslemere, bowling 25 consecutive overs in the steamy heat for figures of 7 for 103.

Haslemere began in confident fashion, playing aggressive shots and going for the win. However, quick wickets for Brian Cervi and Power checked the charge and it was down to the youthful element to support dangerman Lee Clement.

Charlie Pidgeon then entered the attack and, on only his second appearance for the first team, produced an inspired spell of spin to leave the visitors in disarray.

When the final wicket fell, Haslemere were well short of the target. Power and Pidgeon took four wickets apiece.

This victory ensures that it is Churt's most successful season since entering the top division, and there will be no let-up as they chase a top-three place.
