In the near-two decades since, the ravages of the weather and time have taken their toll on the sign - prompting Dawn Barrow, clerk to Churt Parish Council to put out a call for help.
This was answered by Georgie Cowling who said that Carol Madgwick, her mother, but also the original designer, would like to repaint the sign.
They contacted Brewers decorators merchants for advice about the preparation needed and the paint to use and Brewers said it would sponsor the paint and brushes for the project.
The next hurdle was to remove the sign to allow Carol to paint it but despite the best efforts of the Honda Garage in Churt in trying to release the large and very solid nuts attaching the sign to the ground, it proved totally immovable.
Altis tool hire came up trumps with a platform they lent for free, which allowed Carol to repaint the sign in situ and now the sign has come back to life again.
Dawn Barrow said: “Churt is once again proud of its beautiful village sign and special thanks must go to Carol Madgwick, Georgie and Steve Cowling, the Honda Garage in Churt, Altis and Brewers.”
