DESPITE poor weather Chiddingfold Horticultural Society’s third flower show of the year was well attended with more entries than last year.
Before the opening the committee and judges sat down to enjoyed a two- course meal prepared by two members.
As with the other shows this year an exhibition was organised by the Women’s Institute, showing an impressive selection of handi -craft which attracted more visitors.
The prizes were presented by president Syd Daniels, and consisted of those for the autumn show, the summer together with the autumn show, and a combination of all three.
The Chiddingfold Challenge Cup for most points in three shows was given to Ciss Denyer who also gained the Mrs Stein Cup (cut stems), Nathan Cup (vegetables) and a Worshipful Company of Gardeners (WCG) Diploma.
Sheila Rapley won the Tickner Cup (vegetables) and the Searle Challenge Cup (runner-up). The Ballards received the Jack Whale Trophy for fuschias and Peter a WCG Diploma for fruit.
There was a wide range of excellent seasonal photographs and the Photographic Cup went to Beverley Draper for three shows and Phil Underwood the Wildflower Trophy for one show.
On this occasion three daughters of successful mothers entered and won prizes: Jane Hainsworth-Birt received a WCG Novice Diploma, Emma Bell the Barlow Cup (dahlias) and Annabel Chaplin the Colonel and Mrs Bullock Cup (cookery).
Other recipients were Mandy Buckle the Gibbs Cup (pot plant), Debbie Annetta Bateman the Hazelbridge Challenge Bowl (flower arranging), Georgia Lacey the Sydenhurst Cup (cookery) and Ted Hobbs the Tait Cup (flower arranging in three shows). Pat Feemantle again showed her expertise in flower arranging and has a WCG Floral Art Certificate.
In the children’s entries Kitty Strutt won the Junior Decoration Award for three shows, Mary Martin the Autumn Show Shield and Else Trovo the Pauline Thompson Cup.
