THE father of 22-year-old Aidan Warner who will remain in hospital for the rest of the year after a tragic accident on Boxing Day 2015 which left him in a coma, spoke fondly of his son as he continues to recover at St George’s Hospital in Tooting.
Aidan who was found lying unconscious in Upper Hale Road, in Farnham, with serious head injuries woke up six weeks ago, and has been eating and talking with family members.
Ian Warner said the first time Aidan spoke his mother, Penny, was fortunate enough to be there with him. “She rung me up and it was quite emotional. He does get a little frustrated but when his mum is there he is a lot calmer, and feels more settled when there are familiar faces around him.
“He calls me via the hospital, he slurs his words a bit and we tell him to speak more slowly so we can understand him and he does. He knows what he’s saying and he is aware of everyone. We are all persevering together.”
During the past six weeks Aidan’s health has improved, and he is on a soft diet without the need of a tube. He is working hard with his physio, alongside his speech therapist. At the moment he is likely to either remain in hospital for the rest of the year, or at a rehabilitation centre.
“It is just a case of him coming on himself. It will be a long time and a long wait but we are hopeful” added Ian. “He doesn’’t remember anything from that night yet. As he progresses his memories will start to come back to him, but he knows who we are and who he is.
“Fingers crossed he will get better and could come out sooner. He does get tired very quickly, but he wants to come home, he gets agitated when we have to leave.
“He tells us he misses us every time we go. It is difficult because of the situation, he thinks he can do things but he can’t. It’s just a waiting game, waiting on his progression.”
Surrey Police have confirmed the investigation is still on-going and that officers are continuing to carry out enquiries to establish what happened, and are keeping an open mind as to whether the incident involved a car or was an assault.
They are continuing to appeal for anyone who has any knowledge of the incident. Information relating to this can be reported to Surrey Police online or by calling 101, quoting the reference number P15329261 when doing so.
