A FORMER soldier, the current chairman of the Surrey Police Authority and an ex-policeman have thrown their hats into the ring to become Surrey's first police crime commissioner.

The nominations of independents Paul Clarke, Peter Williams and Kevin Hurley add to a list of candidates including magistrate Julie Iles (standing for the Conservatives), former district councillor Nick O'Shea (Lib Dems) and ex-MEP Robert Evans (Labour).

Voters across England and Wales will go to the polls this November to elect their chosen commissioner, who will be responsible for overseeing the work of the police in their area.
