ALTON Community Association has has relaunched its community club for senior citizens.

The club was closed during August while Alton Community Centre underwent refurbishment work but re-opened in September and is now run in partnership with Altonian Care and Dementia Friends.

Altonian Care is a family-run home care agency, based in Alton, which delivers care to individuals living in their own homes in the Alton, Liss and Petersfield area. The company aim is to help to improve the quality of clients’ lives while enabling them to maintain independence and personal choice.

An Alzheimer’s Society initiative, Dementia Friends are volunteers who have learned learning more about dementia and are turning that understanding into positive action.

The revamped community club is headed up by co-ordinator Stephanie Cruse.

Now running on a Tuesday and a Wednesday from 10am to 3pm, the club offers improved social and physical wellbeing to its members. Transport to and from the club is available for those living in the town centre.

Alton Community Centre manager Maria Elliott said: “Working in partnership with Altonian Care means we can share their expertise and contacts and offer our services to their clients.”

Tuesdays are open to all and this day offers trips and activities to members such as singing, crafts, quizzes, light armchair exercises, and visiting entertainment. There are trips run to local garden centres and to other venues such as Lasham Gliding Centre and the Basingstoke Canal, offering an opportunity to get out and about with new friends.

Wednesdays are open to the more vulnerable, such as those with early dementia or learning difficulties, and offers friendship and activities to benefit and enhance existing skills. Under the guidance of Dementia Friends, these sessions also offer respite and support to carers.

The cost is £22 per day, which includes a hot meal.
