Laughter, music and friendly competition filled the Methodist Church Hall in South Street, Farnham, last week as regulars at the Sunflower Café played a lively round of musical bingo.

The weekly café, run by care agency Right at Home, offers a welcoming space for people living with dementia – and their carers – to relax, socialise and take part in activities designed to stimulate body and mind.

Community co-ordinator Hayley Thaysen said the sessions are inspired by the belief that “people can still be active members of the community”.

“When people are living with dementia, their social lives can become restricted,” she said. “But here they can chat to others as well as take part in activities. We find couples look out for each other and it’s very companionable – it gives them a support network.”

The Farnham café has four regular volunteers, two of whom first attended with their wives before deciding to help run it.

Right at Home also organises dementia-friendly events across the area, including its upcoming Musical Memories concert at Farnham Maltings on Saturday, October 25, from 2pm to 4pm, and a craft exhibition at The White Barn, Runfold, on Thursday, October 23, from 1pm to 3pm.

Other local initiatives include Singing for the Mind on Mondays in Bordon and Farnham; Love to Move in Farnham on Tuesdays; Time Together on the second Thursday of each month in Alton; and the Sunflower Café in Bordon on the second and fourth Thursday.
