COMPLAINTS by Tongham and Ash residents about vehicles travelling through the villages at speed led to more than 100 vehicles stopped during an enforcement operation. The operation, involving Surrey Police, Guildford Borough Council and the DVLA, was carried out on Friday, June 13, and organised by Ash South and Tongham Neighbourhood Specialist Officer Pc Vanessa Privett. The problem of speeding vehicles and vehicles travelling with excess weight travelling along Oxenden Road in Tongham and along White Lane at Ash Green was highlighted at a recent police clinic. Surrey Police's Roads Policing Unit and armed response vehicles provided Automated Number Plate readers which assisted in identifying offenders. The DVLA provided officers with the facility to clamp motorists who did not have valid Vehicle Excise Licences. Sgt Alison Adams from the Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "This was a hugely successful operation, with more than 100 vehicles stopped by the team. We plan to run similar enforcement days throughout the year to effectively tackle this anti- social use of vehicles." During the day, three vehicles were seized and a further 85 offences dealt with. One of the vehicles was seized for the driver not having a valid driving licence or insurance while the other two were clamped by the DVLA for not having tax discs. Other offences dealt with included not having an MOT certificate, drink driving, not wearing a seatbelt and failing to stop. The next police clinic for Ash South and Tongham will be held on Monday, July 28, from 7pm-8pm at St Paul's School in Tongham. All residents are welcome to come along and meet their policing team.
