PLANS to erect a total of 77 illuminated and non-illuminated signs at the new Tesco store in Petersfield were met with caution by town councillors at a meeting on Tuesday.

Chairman George Watkinson told members of the planning committee there were three main types of sign that concerned him in the application.

They included a six metre high "opening soon" sign, a series of three metre high "welcome" signs and an illuminated roof sign.

Mr Watkinson said: "It is the effect these illuminated signs will have on the view from the top of Butser that I am concerned with. We would get a glow from them. Is this in keeping with the Petersfield area?

"Although one of the signs is six metres high it is standard size for a store like this. The question is whether this is in keeping with the area. I think this is debatable."

Dr Phillip Humphries pointed out that there was no covering letter included with the plans which could have answered councillors' questions of when and for how long the signs will be lit up.

Councillors agreed not to comment on the plans until the letter had been received by the committee.
