AN ARSON attempt on the Rectory at Liss is the latest in a series of fires in the village that are causing concern to police and fire officers.
At about 7 pm on Sunday, when the congregation at St Mary's were in the middle of evensong, fire appliances were called to a fire at St Mary's Rectory.
Apparently there had been an attempt to set fire to the house which had failed but the separate garage on the site was damaged.
The fire service has also been called out twice to the Hillbrow Road car park when the waste paper recycling bin was set on fire.
Last week fire appliances were also at East Hill House and Liss Junior School when there was a fire in a patch of waste land behind the two sites. The fencing for the junior school's tree nursery was damaged.
These come on top of the fires at Syke House in Station Road. There have been several incidents at this derelict property, which has now been boarded up.
At the end of May fire destroyed the roof and upper storey and the building was fenced off.
On Monday, Liss parish councillors received a letter of complaint about the fires in the recycling bins from a resident in Rushfield Road, which backs on to the Hillbrow Road car park. The resident asked for the recycling bins to be moved.
Councillors agreed to contact East Hampshire District Council to discuss the positioning of the bins and whether there was a site at which they would be less vulnerable.
They were also expected to raise the matter at the district police liaison meeting at Liss Triangle Community Centre tonight (Thursday).
Senior police officer at Petersfield, Inspector Steve Sargent, said: "We have some leads which we are following up but we will not be saying anything until we have made more progress.
"We would be grateful to receive any additional information. Please contact the Liss beat officers or Pc Stuart Moore on 0845 045 45 45."
Sergeant Stuart Tripp said that police officers, in uniform and plain clothes, were on extra patrol around the village.
