FARNHAM residents were treated to a first-rate concert at the recently refurbished St Peter’s Church in Wrecclesham.

The concert was organised by oboist Sylvia Ellison, and the appreciative and generous audience raised more than £900 for The Simon Trust.

This locally based charity was set up to build and equip a residential home in Surrey for severely autistic young adults, for whom there is currently no suitable local accommodation.

The concert programme featured a wide variety of English and Scandinavian music for oboe and piano as well as a very accomplished vocal trio from the girls’ choir at St Thomas-on-The Bourne (Molly Beere, Izzy Edwards and April West), accompanied by Andrew Harrap and directed by James Harrison.

It also included the first performance of oboe pieces by young Swedish composer, Jesper Appelgren. Sylvia, and her pupils Charlotte Netherway, Freddie Davies, Maddie Cook and Holly Cadman were sensitively accompanied by Jacob Rothoff, who also performed solo piano items.

The third in this series of concerts will take place in the summer and will feature the Chameleon Arts Wind Quintet.
