POLICE are advising elderly residents in Farnham to be vigilant following a distraction burglary took place last Thursday afternoon. The burglary involved three men and took place at a property in Alma Lane between 1- 25 pm and 1-35 pm. The victim, an 81-year-old woman, was dozing in her living room and woke to find a man in the room who told her he was there to work on the sewer. He then took the woman outside to show her where he would need to dig. It is believed that the man gained entry through the back door that had been left open due to the hot weather. On returning to the house, the woman noticed her handbag and purse had been disturbed. A second man by now had appeared and he told the victim he had just caught a small boy running off with £30 stolen from her handbag. He returned the cash to the victim and suggested that she check if any valuables were missing. At least one man followed the victim upstairs while she checked. A third man then appeared in the house and distracted the victim by enquiring if she had a pension book. The three men said that they would return on Wednesday and left the house on foot heading down Heath Lane. After they had left, the victim noticed that her handbag had been disturbed again with the £30 taken and £200 was also missing from her bedroom upstairs. The offenders are all white men and aged in their early 20s. Their accents were not local and they were from the north, possibly Liverpool or Scotland. The first man is described as about 5ft tall, thin build, light brown short hair and unshaven. He was wearing a green and white checked shirt and trousers. The second man was taller, about 5ft 8", of average build, fresh-faced complexion with brown hair. He was wearing cut-off jeans that were ragged at the hem and a t-shirt. The third man is about 5ft 10" tall and had a slim build. He was wearing a light coloured shirt and a white or beige baseball cap. West Surrey Police officers are advising elderly residents to keep their doors and windows locked when they are at home and to check the ID of anyone who they think may be suspicious. Anyone who has information about this incident is urged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Dave Pellatt on 0845 125 2222.
