HART District Council is supporting national Food Safety Week.

The campaign, which runs until Sunday, is aimed at raising awareness and to help prevent food waste across the district.

According to studies, in the UK, as a country we throw away seven million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year, the majority of which could have been eaten.

This year the Food Standards Agency is focusing on ways in which we can all waste less food safely.

The campaign focuses on the top 10 tips to help reduce food waste, including knowing the difference between ‘Use By’ and ‘Best Before’ dates, not trusting the sniff test, how long you can freeze things for, and when you should freeze food.

John Kennett, Hart District Council cabinet member for regulatory services, said: “This year Food Safety Week ties in with one of Hart’s corporate priorities on reducing the amount of waste produced in the district.”
