Hampshire County Council plans to invest the money over the next three years to improve roads and infrastructure, as part of proposals approved by the executive member for environment and transport Rob Humby. Most of the cash will be spent in Fareham, but £4m is earmarked for work on the A325 road in Bordon.
“This planned investment programme would see us make use of Government grants, bids and developer contributions over the next three years to improve transport infrastructure for people who live and work in Hampshire,” he said.
“The number of new schemes planned demonstrates the county council’s ability and experience in successfully leveraging national funds for the benefit of Hampshire. Our capacity and expertise allows us to deliver a large-scale, high-quality programme of improvements, which will also attract economic growth and spend in the county.”
Major highway schemes make up half of the proposed investment (£100m). As well as in Fareham, these include projects in Farnborough Basingstoke and Nursling.
All the schemes are designed to relieve congestion, improve safety and journey times and unlock economic growth.
Road-and-bridge maintenance makes up the other £108m of the planned budget, which will be spent on highways maintenance, including potholes and resurfacing.
Any remaining budget is set aside for the county’s flood-risk and coastal-defence programme.
Mr Humby said: “We are acutely aware that Hampshire’s highway network is critical to the economic success of Hampshire - which is a significant contributor to the national economy.”
A final decision on the council’s capital and revenue budget 2017-2018 will be made on Thursday.
