HAMPSHIRE County Council hit back at Alton residents who accused it of not making sufficient efforts to clear the ice from roads around the area during last weekend's sudden freeze.

The county council gave its assurance that its fleet of 42 salting vehicles had been working non-stop from Saturday through to Tuesday, but that the temperatures had been just too low for the treatment to be effective.
