The Herald this week asked Surrey and Waverley councils:

Why has nothing happened within the deadline?

Are ‘tangible, costed plans’ in the pipeline. If not, why not?

Has any work on the issues of the town centre taken place since the summit?

What happened to the RegenCo project? At the meeting, it was intimated this would provide what was being asked for. Did it? If not, why not? What did the report focus on? Was it, in fact, a waste of taxpayers’ money?

When do you expect to have some plans in place which can be discussed either in council or by the Farnham community?

Do you agree that, with the pollution levels as they are, that action is now needed? And if so – when?

Surrey ignored every question, and said it hoped to have plans to share ‘in the near future’ – but refused to elaborate what ‘near future’ meant.

It said it was committed to taking action – but was short on facts.

Cllr Tim Oliver, leader of Surrey County Council, said: “We are fully supportive of Waverley’s ambitions and we have a shared vision of a Greener Future for the county.

“This work needs a holistic approach, with proper understanding and engagement with residents and partners, to deliver a long-term plan for real, sustainable change.

“We will step up our support to Waverley in delivering these challenging but vital plans, and we are clear this needs to be a coordinated, properly considered initiative.

“With a full commitment from all key stakeholders we would very much hope to have some options to share with residents in the near future.

“Surrey County Council is absolutely committed to finding a lasting solution to both the air pollution and congestion issues and will ensure the project has the resource it needs to move this forward at pace.”
