PLANS to appoint a town cleaner were discussed by councillors after they noticed an increase in litter and untidiness across Haslemere.
The proposal to hire a town cleaner was discussed by members of Haslemere Town Council's staff sub-committee.
Although a full job description has not yet been put together, the cleaner would be paid by the town council and would be responsible for keeping Haslemere tidy.
Town mayor Michael Barnes welcomed the proposal and commented that if residents saw effort being made, they might be encouraged to help keep the town clean.
A town cleaner has been employed in Midhurst for some time. Town clerk Mike O'Neil said: "He does an excellent job. It would be good if we could find someone who could do the same for our town."
Mr O'Neil said he himself cleaned up the war memorial area whenever he noticed discarded glasses and other rubbish. "If we had a cleaner this would not be necessary," he added
Councillor for Shottermill Mark Lelliott said he was concerned that sometimes areas such as Lion Green were not cleaned immediately after heavy use, such as on summer or bank holiday weekends.
"The current situation is that the contract cleaners have not been able to come out for an 'emergency' clean-up. A more flexible approach may work better," he said.
The sub-committee decided costings should be put together for full discussion at a meeting of the finance and general planning committee.
