HASLEMERE could be home to one of the first wind-powered turbines in the South following Waverley Borough Council's decision to look into the feasibility of introducing wind-powered generators to supply power to homes in the region.

Leader of the council David Harmer told a meeting of the executive committee that officers should report back to the council with details about the cost and efficiency of installing a wind-powered energy system.

He said: "I think it would be useful for us to find out whether it could work, how noisy it would be, how much it would cost, and how much electricity could be generated."

The request follows the visit by several borough councillors to an energy-sustainability conference in Guildford, last week.

Director of housing David January, who attended the council meeting and had visited the conference, said that there was the possibility of looking into installing such a system at the Kilnfields council housing estate in Haslemere.

He added that research into "eco-homes" would be included in the report on wind energy.

Mr Harmer said that the council should be seen to be setting an example in the borough for the use of renewable sources of energy.

The councillor for Haslemere North and Grayswood, Jean Mansley, agreed with Mr Harmer and commented that others may be more likely to follow if the council led the way.

"There is certainly quite a lot of space where we could put the wind turbines, that is provided this technology works and is affordable," Mr Harmer added.
