A SURREY county councillor has stepped in to try to help find a solution to the traffic problems in Longdene Road. Residents hit out at parking problems in the road last week after a bus was forced to mount the pavement to manoeuvre around parked cars. In a letter to Surrey County Council, resident Lorraine Wilson asked for action to be taken in the street before a serious accident occurred. The council has now vowed to discuss the issue and find a long-term solution. Writing to Mrs Wilson, Christine Stevens said: "One thing I am doing is bringing together a range of officers from police, transportation, and Waverley Borough Council with the town mayor and others to look at a number of issues we have in Haslemere. "People are fed up with vandalism, parking issues and speeding. There is a particular zone from Lion Green to Town Meadow and into West Street which needs joined-up solutions. "It is about our general environment and our quality of life. It is also about how we deploy limited resources effectively to make a difference." Mrs Stevens added that problems with parking were something that the police needed to deal with, but added there was no easy solution. She continued: "Dangerous parking is a matter for Surrey Police, but resources are limited. "Parking as a whole is being decriminalised - its enforcement is being handed over to councils. "Surrey County Council and Waverley Borough Council have agreed a way forward on this and there a number of formal stages to go through before council staff can come along and enforce double line parking. "The process involves mapping road lines and correcting them and various road orders and consultation. In effect there is a bit of a hiatus whilst this system gets started." She added that a Surrey County Council engineer was aware of the problems in Longdene Road, and if anything could be done to assist immediately, then it would be.
