AN appeal is being made by a Farnham councillor to urgently upgrade road surfaces and signs at an accident blackspot in Echo Barn Lane, after a car crashed into a resident's garden.

Genny Lane, Waverley borough councillor for Wrecclesham, is calling on Surrey County Council to take further action on the road, in spite of warning chevrons being placed along it alerting drivers to the sharp bend.

The latest in a long history of accidents happened last Friday afternoon, when a Rover Metro came off the road and into trees on a property at the junction of Echo Barn Lane and Manley Bridge Road.

Though no one was injured, according to Dr Lane, this has happened more than 30 times since the mid-nineties.

She said the situation had left the resident whose property has been affected by the crashes extremely concerned for their safety.

Dr Lane said: "There have been a number of accidents along this road and they all take the same form, with people driving either from or to the A325. Drivers have problems whenever there is rain and leaf-fall on the road, making it slippery.

"I am absolutely alarmed that we are facing this problem again. The lady whose property the car landed in is very distressed by this and said it was very dangerous.

"She is worried that her husband and herself may be hit by another car when they go out of their front gate to take out the rubbish."

Though she said the road had been resurfaced four years ago, she believed it was now wearing out and needed an urgent long-term solution.

She added that South West Surrey MP Virginia Bottomley has been alerted to the problem, and hoped it would be dealt with quickly to avoid further incidents.

This was especially the case as roadworks being conducted in Rowledge have diverted further traffic along the already traffic-burdened Echo Barn Lane, creating a higher accident risk.
