WAVERLEY Borough Council has expressed concern over the impending post office closures within the borough. A motion was carried at the full council meeting on Tuesday, October 16, to support and work with residents to minimise the impact of post office closures. The government has agreed to Post Office Ltd closing 2,500 post offices across the country by the end of 2008. Post Office Ltd has announced that it will review post office provision in Waverley and the rest of Surrey, alongside parts of West Sussex and Berkshire. The proposals will be subject to a six-week consultation period in January 2008. The council considers post offices to be an essential part of the social fabric of the borough and strongly feel a comprehensive network of post offices must be retained. As such, the council is very concerned about the effects of the closures and will be working with Post Office Ltd and Postwatch to secure the retention of the best possible post office services within the criteria set down by the government. Councillor David Munro, who proposed the motion said: "We must resist excessive and inappropriate post office closures. "Several of Waverley's 27 post offices are likely to be closed if this borough follows the national trend. "All of us depend heavily on post offices and their loss will hit our localities deeply. "Waverley will fight the closures by carefully analysing the proposals set out during the public consultation in January, facilitating residents to have their say, working in partnership with parish and town council and other groups, and lobbying our MPs."
