FLY tipping problems at Alexandra Park, Bordon, were put under the microscope on Monday evening.

Deadwater Valley ranger Mike Wearing took six Whitehill town councillors on a walk to the park and behind the homes in Branson Road and Savile Crescent to show them the rubbish dumped there.

Mr Wearing said: "We have a horrific amount of rubbish dumped down there. We have an old motorbike, fridges, cookers, what is left of old mattresses, builders' rubble, in fact all sorts of rubbish - it is just such a mess.

"There has always been fly tipping and we can keep on top of the fly tipping in the Deadwater, but not Alexandra Park.

"We could just keep clearing it up, but I have to ask what the long-term solution will be.

"It is too much for me to clear or for the volunteers to clear."

The ranger, along with Kitty Bennett and Bill Wain from the Deadwater Valley Trust, showed town councillors Don Mayes, Faith Thomas, Chris Wain, Basil Smith, Andrea Moxon and Phil Harrison the extent of the problem.

"There were big piles of mud everywhere where people have been dumping their garden waste," said Mr Wearing.

But there was one amusing incident, when the group saw someone wheeling away some of the rubble.

"It was nice to see some of the rubbish going the other way," said Mr Wearing.

He is hopeful that the council will be able to come up with measures to encourage local residents to dispose of their waste properly, rather than dumping it in local beauty spots.

The town council will discuss the problem at a future meeting.
