THE threat of Storm Angus failed to dampen the spirits of visitors to Farnham’s Christmas lights switch-on.

In the lead up to the Saturday’s event, the crowds enjoyed performances by schools, dance, theatre groups and bands. Father Christmas proved to be a popular attraction along with the live nativity and funfair.

Shortly before 4.30pm, the Mayor of Farnham, John Ward. and Paralympic gold medal winner Rachel Morris were welcomed onto the stage. After a countdown from 10, Rachel switched on the lights and declared the official start of Christmas in Farnham.

Jill Hargreaves, the town council’s lead member for tourism and events, said: “I was stationed at the Farnham Town Council information tent and had the pleasure of meeting many visitors.

“I would like to thank Specsavers for being our principal sponsor. Without their support, it would not have been possible to stage such a fun event.”

This year, the Christmas lights have been extended to cover a greater area of the town centre including new lights in Downing Street and Longbridge and additional lights in Wrecclesham. The scheme also includes the dressing of the trees in Castle Street.

Mrs Hargreaves added: “Over the next few weeks, we have many festive events lined up. On Saturday, December 3, we are encouraging residents and visitors to come to Farnham for a day of entertainment and free parking.

“As part of Small Business Saturday, parking will be free from 10am in all Waverley-owned car parks. There will be a very festive atmosphere in town along with music and some fun activities in the Lion and Lamb Yard and elsewhere.

“The following weekend, on Sunday, December 11, we are pleased to announce that our very popular Christmas market will return to Castle Street, The Bush Hotel and Central car park. There really is no need to go any further than Farnham for this year’s Christmas shopping.”
