THERE are less than two weeks to go before the 114th Liphook Carnival.
The biggest annual event in the parish, which takes place on Saturday, October 24, draws thousands of spectators into the village each year, who enjoy entertainment, a procession, bonfire and fireworks.
Organisers are inviting anyone who wants to participate in this year’s event to turn up on the day in Longmoor Road, where floats, walkers and push and pull participants assemble during the afternoon.
Chairman Karen Feeney said: “It is much easier than people think to take part in the procession and any business has the chance to promote itself to an audience of more than 4,000 people by doing so. Or just dress up and walk the route around the village.
“We also have a new cup this year - the John Carver trophy for the Best Newcomer, which is even more of an incentive for anyone new to take part!
“Our sponsors are Allianz, Clarke Gammon Wellers, The Herald and we have received generous donations from the Classic Car Day at The Deer’s Hut, at Griggs Green, where the party after the Carnival will be held.”
The day kicks off with the children’s fancy dress competition at Liphook Junior School, in Avenue Road, starting at 11am.
Judging takes place at 11.30am followed by children’s entertainment. Procession participants assemble in Longmoor Road during the afternoon, where judging in all categories starts at 5.45pm.
Entertainment in The Square will be provided by the Bournemouth Carnival and the Dolphin Marching Bands, starting at 6.45pm
This year’s Carnival Queen Jodie Molesworth, Princess Megan Shepherd and her attendants Lily Windle and Mamta Tamang will lead the procession into The Square at 7pm with the Royal float.
The bonfire and fireworks are held in Radford Park starting at 8.30pm, after all floats have completed the circuit around the village.
Sainsbury’s store will be closing at 5.30pm and major road closure will also be in place starting at 3pm until 9pm.
