PLANS to build a new library at Alton have been confirmed as one of Hampshire County Council's key priorities for this financial year.

Despite recent confusion over when Alton will be getting its new library and a report which suggested another two-year wait was on the cards, confirmation came this week that all is in hand.

The project was highlighted as one of the council's top building projects to be included in the capital programme for 2001 - 2002 during a meeting of the policy and resources committee this week.

Proposals for the replacement library are currently being worked on and the project will be partially funded by the sale of part of the site which is owned by the county council.

Chairman of the policy and resources committee Ken Thornber said: "Alton residents should know that this project remains one of the council's key priorities and I am hopeful that building work will be able to start this year. However this is of course dependent on both planning approval and contractors' availability."
