TWO Odiham residents are currently on the adventure of a lifetime to raise money for charity.

Liam and Roxy Purell headed to Hong Kong this month to raise money for CIS’ters.

The charity provide emotional support for females aged 18 and over who were raped, sexually abused or exploited by a member of their immediate and/or extended family as children or teenagers.

The charity also offers support through monthly meetings, where women meet and talk about their experiences, how they have moved forward, their fears and methods of coping as well as holding weekend workshops with guest speakers and other survivors who have moved forward and found ways to help others.

After looking at skydives and bungee jumps to fundraise for CIS’ters the couple decided on something they could work towards and physically challenge themselves and train and work hard for, in turn, giving them a sense of achievement upon completion.

Roxy told The Herald ahead of their trip: “We are going to Hong Kong in November to visit family and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to combine a charity fundraiser with exploring the area.

“We have chosen long and moderate-difficultly hikes, doing two over two days, ‘The Dragon’s Back Trail’ on the first day which is approximately five hours long, then “The Three Dragon Gorge” hike on the second day which is six hours long.”

Liam, an aircraft technician based at RAF Odiham, and Roxy, who runs her own business ‘Fur Babies’ - a dog walking, daycare, boarding service - said they just want to give something back, and are now aiming to do one big fundraiser a year.

Roxy added: “They (CIS’ters) don’t really advertise much, they don’t cover papers, buses or the TV with advertisements because obviously it’s a very raw and delicate subject and most survivors want to get better and move on, not parade it.

“But that’s why they need our help, bigger charities get plenty or attention and support so we are aiming to help the less known and smaller ones.”
