Confronted by Jonathan Pay, 46, who was armed with a gun intending to rob the bank, Tommy (pictured with Abbey, 49, on the morning breakfast show) said he reacted on instinct by calling the robber’s bluff.
“Shoot her, she’s nothing to do with me”, were his words, when Pay held a gun to Abbey’s head threatening to pull the trigger, thereby distracting him.
In the scuffle that followed, Tommy, 50, tried to wrestle the gun out of Pay’s hand, uncovering his face, which later led to the conviction of the robber. A second accomplice stabbed Tommy in the abdomen with a knife and Pay took a shot at him with his air gun, before they both fled empty handed.
The pellet went through Tommy’s cheek and is now lodged at the base of his neck, which could leave his face paralysed if operated on.
The couple, who met when they were only 11 and 12 year olds and have been married for 31 years are to receive a special bravery award from Hampshire Constabulary’s Chief Constable, Olivia Pinkney in January.
Pay of Liphook Road, Lindford, was jailed for 16-and-a-half years at Winchester Crown Court. Police are still appealing for any information on the second man, who they have so far been unable to identify.
