THE Courts of Justice in Southampton will open their doors to a criminal justice open day on Saturday.
To take place from 10am-3pm at the law courts on London Road, the event is open to anyone wanting to go behind the scenes to find out how a judge or magistrates deal with sentencing.
A court spokesman said: “If you’ve ever wondered what a magistrate does, or wanted to see what happens during a trial, now is your chance. You can even sit in the judge’s chair, try on a judge’s robes and wig and have your fingerprints taken. With fun for all the family, you can meet the emergency and prison transportation services, and check out inside their vehicles.
“Aimed at opening the world of criminal justice to all ages, visitors will have a chance to tour the court building (including the cells), view crown and magistrates’ courts mock trials and sentence cases and speak with a judge and magistrates to gain an understanding of what it takes to fulfil their role.”
Along with the behind-the-scenes look around, for younger children there will be a soft play area and face painting available on the day.
There is no parking available at the law courts, so visitors are asked to use the multi-storey car park in Bedford Place.
The criminal justice open day is supported by Hampshire police and crime commissioner Michael Lane, and his team who will be there on the day to show how the commissioner is helping to reduce offending and increase safety across the policing area.
