PEOPLE living on the A272 on the outskirts of Petersfield fear there could be a death on the road unless speed limits are imposed. Alison Lubbock, who lives at Westmark Farm, said she lived in fear of one of her children or her animals being injured on the road where speeding motorists and motorcyclists were a constant nightmare. She said she had contacted East Hampshire District Council and Hampshire County Council in the past, but nothing had been done. Mrs Lubbock added that three cars had flipped over after hitting her boundary wall in the last four years. In one case, a car driven by an 84-year-old woman motorist ended up on its roof in her garden after careering over the wall. The woman miraculously escaped unhurt but the final straw came on Sunday when a van collided with the wall and demolished a complete section. "I was in the house when I heard this loud smack," said Mrs Lubbock. "When I looked out of the window a red van was travelling down the A272 past the house. I didn't think any more about it until I saw the wall later in the day and part of it had gone completely." And now she is calling for a 40mph speed limit to make life safer for those living along the road. "This is a hamlet with people living in homes beside the road, children, dogs and other animals. There are businesses here as well as our own working farm and normally in a hamlet there would be a speed restriction." And Mrs Lubbock warned: "If you travel too fast on this road and it's not your day, someone is going to get killed." A spokesman for Hampshire County Council said: "We haven't had any other complaints about speed problems at this location and we don't have plans to change the speed limit. "However, speed limits on all 'A' and 'B' roads in the county will be reviewed within the next four years to comply with recommendations from the Department for Transport. "We have not yet developed a detailed programme of what road will be looked at when," he added.
