ALTON'S Christmas tree in the Market Square could be hit by the credit crunch.
Having stepped into the breach last year to take on sponsorship of the town's main tree the economic climate has forced Persimmon to pull out. The house builder was due to start constructing a 150-home development behind Chandos Lodge in Anstey Road.
But the plummeting housing market has put the development on hold and has left Persimmon unable to continue its support for the town's Christmas effort.
Deputy town clerk Greg Burt, who organises the seasonal display, said that while Persimmon regretted having to pull out this year, it hoped to be able to help out again in the future.
"In the meantime, we hope that another public-spirited business or individual might like to put their name to the centrepiece of our Christmas lighting display."
According to Mr Burt, it costs £500 to sponsor the 35ft high tree and the sponsor's name will be displayed on a seasonal message alongside.
The tree is due to be lit-up on during the town's annual Christmas switch-on ceremony on Friday, November 28.
