NINETY-ONE fewer Waverley people were victims of crime last year, bringing the total for 2001/2 down to 4,998.

Almost twice as many crimes were recorded in neighbouring Guildford - 9,012 - during the same period. Violent crime was down by 125 and commercial burglaries down 31.

But it is not all good news. Thirty-two more people were the victims of car crime and four more had their houses broken into.

West Surrey police, which covers Waverley and Guildford, said it is committed to targeting car crime in Waverley, as evidenced by Operation Nail.

This disrupted the criminal behaviour of 10 persistent young offenders believed to be responsible for a large proportion of the division's vehicle crime. The number of car crimes fell by 67 per cent after the operation began in February.

Waverley saw six more robberies than last year, the majority of such crimes in Waverley and Guildford involving thefts or attempted thefts of mobile phones - 60 per cent of victims being under 18. Police have visited schools as part of a campaign to raise awareness of this.
