GOVERNMENT proposals to pay benefits directly into bank accounts will "rip the heart out of village life" and could lead to the closure of a number of sub post offices in the Haslemere area.

Chiddingfold sub postmaster Mark Adams, who has already launched a petition in opposition to the move, warned this week that the new proposals could spell the end for village post offices.
