ECO-friendly Cubs and Scouts have given an area of Petersfield a facelift. The boys, from the 1st Petersfield Scout group, have transformed a piece of land at the end of Tor Way as part of their centenary celebrations. Having been given permission from Hampshire County Council to clear the overgrown land last summer, youngsters have undertaken the environmental challenge with vigour. They have dumped masses of rubbish, hacked away rampant brambles and ivy, and in the autumn planted bulbs – which have now bloomed to give a beautiful and bright display. Scout leader Melanie Robinson recommended that the group undertake the work after walking her dog last summer, and the results are there for all to see. "It certainly looks a lot better than it did this time last year," said Melanie. "Last summer it was in a bit of a mess, and I knew the Scout centenary was coming up, so I thought the group could embark upon an environmental project for the town. "Cubs and Scouts work there every other month, and we benefit greatly from the benefit of some dads in the group who are horticulturists." Work has also been carried out to open up the space, in line with the planting, which should make it an attractive area for everyone coming into town, she said, and many positive comments have already been received. Melanie said it was an ongoing project as the group's contribution to the town beyond its 100th year, and she thanked Southdown Building Limited for sponsoring the planting and the hard work of the Cubs, Scouts and their parents. n To find out about other activities planned for the year, or to donate Scout memorabilia to the group, [email protected]">[email protected].
