SHEFF WEDNESDAY 1
ALDERSHOT TOWN 0
ALDERSHOT'S eventful FA Cup campaign came to an abrupt end in windswept South Yorkshire on Saturday, courtesy of three-time winners Sheffield Wednesday.
Ryan Lowe's 50th-minute goal in front of Hillsborough's iconic Kop end was enough to deny the Shots passage to the third round. But, following the 8-0 drubbing Aldershot received in their last meeting with the Owls in 1989, a 1-0 defeat was far from humiliating.
Characteristically, Aldershot manager Dean Holdsworth bemoaned one lapse of concentration for costing his side the tie, but the Hampshire outfit put in another heroic performance to keep the deficit to one goal and can now reflect on an epic year of cup action.
With the new year approaching, 2011 will live long in the memory as the year they beat West Ham United at Upton Park, battled Manchester United in the fourth round of the Carling Cup, and travelled to the revered Hillsborough in the FA Cup.
